Facebook Stops Path From Finding Friends After Spam Mishap: Report

Path

Facebook has cut off Path‘s ability to access its “Find Friends” function, according to a report.

Users of the social-network app, which let users share private updates with close friends and family, can no longer search for friends using Facebook, TechCrunch reported Saturday. Access was restricted after Path updated its smartphone app on Friday. However, the San Francisco-based company can still use Facebook as a login option, and share posts to Facebook.

TechCrunch speculates that Facebook blocked Path’s “Find Friends” access because of a spamming mishap in which the app bombarded users’ address book contacts with invites.

Facebook’s platform policies disapprove of spam, and under it “content” section, says:

Quality of content: you are responsible for providing users with a quality experience and must not confuse, defraud, mislead, spam or surprise users.

In February, Path settled an FTC complaint that called the user interface for its iOS app “misleading.” The commission said Path automatically collected and stored personal information — including full names, addresses and phone numbers — from users’ mobile address book even if they did not opt to select a “find friends from your contacts” option.

Facebook also blocked MessageMe’s “Find Friends” access in March, but did so because the app competes directly with Facebook Messenger.

Facebook and Path did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
