Social Media Weekly (March 14)

What’s new this week? We’ve pin-pointed a few changes in the social media landscape to share with you:

1. Instagram Launches a Redesigned Android App

This week, Instagram launched it’s bright and shiny Version 5.1 in the Google Play store. The new version provides users with a redesign that “makes for a speedier, resource-light experience”. This simpler redesign is meant to keep things looking good and running smooth but will also make Instagram more accessible across a larger range of devices, from all ends of the price spectrum. What else? It also promises to load your profile in half the time – perfect for getting that #foodstagram in before you dig in.

2. Facebook Revamps Pages on Desktops

It’s a big week for new designs. Facebook has just announced a new look for Pages on desktop, announced to roll out immediately. The biggest change? All posts will now be on one column, just like on user profiles. Additionally, page admins can now leverage the “Pages to Watch” feature which lets them track and compare the performance of brands similar to their own, including top line stats and the competitor’s most engaging posts. We’ll definitely keep an eye out to see how brands will begin to play around with this new design and new insights.

3. Chinese Tech Firms begin issuing Virtual Credit Cards

Now for a deeper dive into the region: China’s tech firms have taken it to the next step to make online shopping even easier. Alibaba, Chinese e-commerce giant, will work with CITIC Bank to issue one million virtual credit cards next week. The virtual card can be used on certain e-commerce platforms but can also be taken offline to retail outlets that accept the new Alipay Wallet app as a payment method. How do you think this new shopping development will take off?
