“Eye to Eye”: The Viral Music Video That Pakistan’s Internet Can’t Stop Laughing At

It looks like Pakistan may have found its own Rebecca Black. Or the Numa Numa guy. Or this guy. You know what, this really is better without an introduction. Just watch this, and then we’ll talk:

OK, so that was the music video for “Eye to Eye,” which was produced, written, performed, and directed by Taher Shah. According to Propakistani, three days ago no one had ever heard of Taher Shah, but now he’s one of the most talked-about people in Pakistan. His video has attracted thousands of views on tune.pk and nearly 200,000 on Youtube already.

Needless to say, most of the enthusiasm for Shah’s video is ironic, and like its viral video predecessors, “Eye to Eye” is spawning all sorts of mocking memes making fun of everything from the awkward video to the other-the-top lyrics. Here are just a few we pulled from Twitter, where #EyetoEye hit number one on Pakistan’s trending topics list:

Probably needless to say, there are also a lot of gruesome memes of people poking their own eyes out because the song is so bad, and lots of photos of various celebrities looking at each other with suggestive captions about the two engaging in “eye-to-eye.”

It’s enough to feel bad for the guy, but you’d think that by now people have seen enough examples to figure out that producing your own song and then making an awkward video with yourself in it probably isn’t a great idea. Then again, as many of his viral predecessors have learned, ironic viral fame is still fame, and it’s possible Taher will be able to somehow turn all this mocking into something positive for himself. In the meantime, we’ll be watching to see if “Eye to Eye” goes big outside Pakistan or whether Shah will stay a local legend.
