What Chinese consumers want in a mobile phone, and what worries them about domestic brands

Are you trying to sell a mobile phone to the Chinese market? If you make mobile phones, you probably are, considering that China’s mobile market is gigantic and still has a lot of room to grow. But what are Chinese consumers looking for in their next phone? Chinese tech portal Sina Tech polled 91,666 of its readers and asked them what the number one thing they looked for in a mobile phone was. Though Sina Tech’s readers are admittedly more tech-friendly than the average Chinese person, 100,000 is simply too big a sample size to ignore, so here’s what they said:

There aren’t an awful lot of surprises here, but it’s worth noting that at least for Sina’s tech-savvy users, price is a bit less important than some might have suspected.


So how can international companies compete with domestic brands? This next chart may help. Sina Tech also asked its readers what their biggest concerns were when it came to purchasing domestic phones, and perhaps unsurprisingly, their answers were quite similar, with “quality” snagging an even bigger piece of the pie:
