Support of Indonesia’s tech startups on behalf of academia is picking up speed. Binus University, a key player in the local tech scene, has now launched its own accelerator program. Binus University is Indonesia’s second private school to launch a program that helps students create tech startups. The first university to do so was Multimedia Nusantara University (UMN).
The Binus Startup Accelerator is a series of “pitching-mentorship programs” for active Binus students who are interested in becoming entrepreneurs. Every semester, the university will receive student tech startup submissions and choose up to five interesting ideas. The selected teams will then go through a 12-week accelerator program.
The chosen teams will receive Rp 20 million (US$1,600) in seed funding and other perks such as mentorship, office facilities, a series of company building activities, and go-to-market support. Binus claims that the support offered is worth up to Rp 80 million ($6,400). However, the university has yet to finalize the amount of shares it plans to keep from each participating startup.
Not everyone will be able to apply, though. The startup accelerator is open only to Binus students who are in semesters seven or eight. These students can opt to go down the entrepreneurship route as oppose to taking up the university’s usual required internship or thesis programs. This is in line with Binus University’s goal for 2018, where it expects two out of three of its graduates to either be working in a multinational company or as entrepreneurs.
Here are the first 3 startups
Last night, Binus picked three teams that will enter the accelerator in February. These three were selected from eight teams that went through a two-day bootcamp. The following three startups have become Binus’s first accelerator startup batch.
- Ennouns is set to be a website directory for events. It will allow organizers to promote their event online, while users can learn of events they are interested in.
- Info Diskon will be an app directory for discounts. Users can discover ongoing discounts inside the app, search for nearby available discounts, and follow brands for updates on sales.
- Starnesia will become a video platform where users can create their own channels filled with videos found on other websites. These videos will also be sorted into relevant categories. The aim is to help users find the best and most interesting videos online.
Besides Binus and UMN, the local college Gajah Mada University works with local venture capitalist Ideosource to develop its own incubation program for students.
