This fascinating infographic from Global Web Index’s GWI Social Summary Q3 2014, shows how virtual private network (VPN) usage has taken off in Asia Pacific where many countries restrict access to global internet platforms like Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, Instagram, and Google. The numbers are most impressive in China, where GWI reports that over 93 million internet users have used VPN to access restricted social media platforms, while nearly 1/3 have an account on Facebook and Twitter. Even though internet restrictions have helped China to nurture three of the world’s largest social networks, netizens are very much plugged into global social media – and marketers must assume that savvy mainland consumers have access to all brand channels when developing their China strategies. [GWI]
