Building a world-class startup? You should listen to Peng T. Ong at #StartupAsia Jakarta

Peng T Ong Monk's Hill Ventures

Peng T. Ong knows how to build a startup. He wrote the software for Match.com, a pioneer in online dating when it launched in 1995. He then started California-based Interwoven, a content management software firm. As the president and CEO, he led the company to an initial public offering on Nasdaq in 1999, and the firm was later sold in 2009 for roughly US$775 million.

Later, he became a venture capitalist. He started Beijing-based VC firm GSR Ventures, which backed a mobile gaming startup called FunPlus that was sold for US$960 million. FunPlus is famous for making a FarmVille clone called Family Farm. His most recent endeavor is Monk’s Hill Ventures, a US$80 million fund based in Singapore that will invest in Southeast Asian startups. Monk’s Hill is also the name of his secondary school, and as he likes to emphasize, a non-elite one.

With almost two decades of entrepreneurial and investment experience, Ong (or Peng as people call him) has tons to share. And he will be doing so at Startup Asia Jakarta, where he will give a keynote speech on “10 elements you need to build a world-class startup.” The session will start on day two (November 27) at 5.40pm.

While we at Tech in Asia would like to keep the contents of his keynote under wraps until the day, we’re fortunate enough to have him write a couple of articles for us.

Check out his piece on how you should treat fundraising like an event, as well as his missive on how startups should have a sales learning curve.

These should be enough to whet your appetite until our signature conference comes around.
