Indians love their food. And of late, more and more of them have taken to fine dining. They are willing to try restaurants that offer experiences which go beyond just good food. They look for bespoke set meals, wine and cocktail pairings, and master classes with famous chefs. That’s what GourmetItUp promises.
This Mumbai-based startup, which runs a restaurant reservations site focusing on curated fine dining experiences, just raised US$300,000 in its first round of funding from angel investors.
GourmetItUp has partnered with over 75 leading restaurant brands in India to design exclusive culinary experiences. For diners, it works as a value-added-service that highlights the unique offerings of each restaurant, gives culinary guidance, and helps them pick what they like. GourmetItUp’s partnerships with restaurants help them give discounted deals to diners.
Food lovers Deepa Jain and Kunal Jain founded GourmetItUp, their current venture in 2012. Both of them are experienced entrepreneurs. Earlier, Kunal Jain co-founded and exited Indianhanger, an ecommerce site selling designer apparel and accessories. Deepa Jain founded RecipeMobile, which supplied gourmet food to restaurants and directly to customers.
According to a statement from GourmetItUp, the funding will be used primarily for expansion into new India markets as well as international ones, and for deeper technology integration with their restaurant partners.
The competition is already hot in this space. Sequoia-backed Zomato, a restaurant finder site with a broader offering, is already present in over 100 cities across 17 countries.
