LeTV cracks China’s top 3 video streaming sites

When it comes to video streaming sites in China, here are the top three: Youku, iQiyi, LeTV. That’s according to data from both Comscore and iResearch that shows LeTV hopping into the third place spot for the months of July and August this year.

The data from iResearch, which tracks total hours of video viewed over the course of the month, shows that LeTV edged out Sohu for the third-place spot in both months, although it still lagged significantly behind the leaders Youku and iQiyi. Here are a couple of charts, via TechWeb:

(If you’re using the chart above to compare companies’ performance, note that Youku and Tudou are listed as separate sites above, although they belong to the same company).

Comscore’s Media Matrix tracking for July and August, which follows a website’s unique visitor count rather than tracking hours of video viewed, also puts LeTV in the number-three spot in China’s streaming video market for July and August of this year, according to TechWeb.

This is good news for LeTV, of course, but it will be interesting to see if the site can retain its spot in the fall. China’s streaming video market can be heavily influenced by popular TV shows and films, and a new season of a hot show could push Sohu past LeTV and knock it back out of the top three. And the increasingly strict restrictions placed on foreign TV shows that were put into place last month could also have a significant effect on fall viewership data.
