As part of a joint initiative between Telkom Indonesia and the Indonesia Digital Creative Industry Community (MIKTI), MIKTI announced today the it has opened a new co-working space in Malang, a satellite town of Indonesia’s second largest city Surabaya.

The space is funded by Telkom’s CSR fund, and has been dubbed Dilo Malang (short for “Digital Lounge Malang”). It provides facilities such as shared meeting rooms, classrooms, and common areas for entrepreneurs to network and build their startups collectively. The space is free to use for members, and will host events like training workshops and competitions in an effort to support East Java’s tech startup community.

The Dilo initiative is somewhat similar to the Digital Valley co-working spaces in Yogyakarta and Bandung, which were also launched by Telkom, except the Dilo initiative has no in-house incubators.Dilo 1

“Malang is known as a city full of educational institutions with qualified and creative young people,” says Joddy Hernady, head of the Telkom’s innovation and design center. “We believe the digital creative industries in Malang will grow well with capital, especially with Dilo in existence.”

13 local startups attended the opening ceremony of Dilo, including Jakarta Founder Institute graduate Travelcar, curated online city directory KitaKemana, and Kwikku, a local popularity-based social network.

MIKTI claims all of Dilo’s workshops will coach budding entrepreneurs on developing hard skills like accounting and programming, along with soft skills like communication and character creation. MIKTI says Dilo’s workshops will also bring in mentors from around the nation.
