Italy’s perspective on international trade in one (ugly) chart

A new study of Italy‘s competitive advantages by three trade groups, including Italy‘s chamber of commerce, contains this chart (pdf, p.24) comparing various countries’ ability to supposedly out-export Germany:

The chart examines 4,000 export items, and calculates the number in which countries “beat” Germany. Italy is in second place with 1,215 (never mind that there are presumably 2,785 products for which Italy’s exports were less valuable than Germany’s.)

Because what is international trade, if not a chance to demonstrate superiority over Germany?
