Survive! Mola Mola! is going strong. Ranking fifth in simulation games on the App Store for both Korea and Singapore, it’s also ranked third, fourth, and tenth in Singapore, Korea, and Taiwan respectively in the same category for Google Play. App Annie figures aside, the number of dead mola mola (also known as the ocean sunfish) on your Facebook newsfeed is probably testament enough to this game.
In the wake of Survive! Mola Mola’s success, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that a South Korean developer has developed a Flappy Bird spinoff featuring the oddly lovable sunfish.
Get Bigger! Mola takes the mechanics of Flappy Bird, combines it with those of Feeding Frenzy, and adds the ocean sunfish to the mix. The game was launched on Google Play yesterday by Molamola Games, a three-man outfit based in Seoul set up in June 2014.
Get Bigger! Mola isn’t just capitalizing on the weird fish craze – it’s actually a pretty good game on its own. As a little mola, you have to flap your way through an ocean full of predators, gobbling up jellyfish until you get large enough to become a predator yourself. There are in-app purchases for premium currency, and, annoyingly enough, popup ads as well.
Every bit of food you consume makes the mola mola get bigger, and you progress to the next stage – with new food and predators – when you get large enough. It’s an entertaining little action game that’s a lot easier and, dare I say, more compelling than Flappy Bird thanks to character upgrades and unlockable mola mola in different outfits.
While Get Bigger! Mola lacks the madcap charm of the 8-bit original Survive! Mola Mola, it’s enough for killing time on your next commute.
