5 of the craziest Korean indie games spotted at G-Star 2014

Japan’s well known for being quirky – a trait that often rubs off on the country’s video games. But Korea? It has its fair share of the weird and the wonderful as well. Here are some strangely intriguing games we saw at G-Star 2014. The last game on the list is a doozy!

Alpaca Run

alpaca runAlpacas were all the rage at one point, with Alpaca-chan being a regular prize in UFO catching machines. Korean studio Kaiman Games has taken that craze a step further with its infinite running game, Alpaca Run. While simple, Alpaca Run is given depth with four different floors you can run on, a bunch of obstacles, and the need to collect stars. Also, the alpaca is ridiculously cute.

Alpaca Run is already available on Android.

Maghead

This mobile arcade game is just the first of a three-part series featuring characters called “Magheads.” Armed with magnets on their heads, these super-deformed humans from the future must fight their way through hordes of enemies. It’s pretty crazy, with a vibe reminiscent of games like Denpaman and Tomodachi Life. Check out what I mean:

You can keep up with the Maghead characters here. The games and IP belong to the appropriately-named Maghead studio.

Angry Baba

What happens when you rain asteroids down on a prehistoric neanderthal whose hair is so long you can’t see his eyes? You make him angry, of course. And that makes him want to hit things. Angry Baba is a 3D batting game from South Korean developer Pigment Games. While there’s a universal English version, it makes use of minimal text: the focus is all on the angry baba and him getting asteroids to hit flying pelicans with beaks full of rubies. These rubies are used to upgrade your baba for better hits. It’s a very simple game but one that’s visually pleasing and pretty satisfying! It’s also pretty crazy because eventually there are spaceships and mammoth and… we won’t spoil it further.

Angry Baba 2 is already in the works, but in the meantime, Angry Baba is available for iOS and Android.

Plants War 2

What happens when you combine League of Legends with plants? Plants War 2 is the second game in the series and is still in development, but it’s got a pretty interesting concept. Like in League and Dota, you’ve got to destroy the enemy’s base before he destroys yours. We were able to take the first Plants War for a spin, but the game appears to be single player only. Hopefully the Ideabox Studio-developed Plants War 2 will be able to introduce a multiplayer experience. Its predecessor, published by Gamevil, boasts over one million downloads to date. Try it here.

Rice Time(?)

This last and most insane game was at a booth unfortunately not manned by anyone. The only English words we could pick out were “Rice Time,” and unfortunately we’re not sure if that’s the name of the game or the studio. Rice Time is a simple arcade game that starts off innocently enough. A bunch of cute characters take turns going to the bathroom… until the cesspool overloads, explodes, and sends swirls of poop into the air. You must pick up bonuses as these rain down – and avoid the poop of course!

And that’s just what we saw at G-Star. Do you have any crazy Korean indie games to share? Tell us in the comments.
