In general, Indonesians are pretty proud of their social media usage. Perhaps Jakarta’s congested rush hour traffic gives locals more time to play with their smartphones and send out status updates.
In June, Twitter confirmed that it has around 20 million active users in Indonesia. Globally, the company has close to 255 million active users, but Jakarta is the most active city on the social network, and 15 percent of the world’s tweets are brewed up in the archipelago.
Twitter has infiltrated many levels of Indonesia’s social landscape. In July, nearly 100 million tweets related to the nation’s presidential election went out, making Twitter an important catalyst for determining public opinion in what was arguably the country’s most pivotal political race to date.

Perhaps the more important question: Is Twitter hiring in Jakarta?
We will interview Rick Mulia, the business head of Twitter Indonesia, on stage at Startup Asia Jakarta 2014 to learn more about what the booming social network has in store for the world’s largest archipelago.
