Startup92 launches as a hub for Pakistan’s fledgling ecosystem

Every community needs a hub to gather around, and in Pakistan’s fledgling startup ecosystem a new site called Startup92 wants to be that place.

It’s built around a newsletter and a startup jobs board. More elements will be added in later.

Startup92 is a part-time project created by Imran Haider. (Disclosure: He has written a couple of guest posts for us in the past.) It stems from his earlier newsletter, called Pak Startup Weekly. “I have always been inspired by newsletters,” Haider says. “I am not exactly sure when I started loving this idea of content curation. Perhaps it originated from the frustration of having to go to an endless array of websites to stay ahead of the curve.”

He says that the newsletter part of Startup92 is meant to accessible to entrepreneurs, investors, or interested spectators – such as himself.

“I have worked in the corporate sector for seven years and I’m still part of it in many ways. I have many friends and colleagues who have a very keen interest in knowing about the [startup] ecosystem. More importantly they want to contribute. But they are not sure, how. They are so busy in their day to day jobs that they hardly get any time to go to different news portals and see what’s going on. Pak Startup Weekly can solve this problem for them,” explains Haider.

The jobs board already has some listed openings at interesting local startups such as Groopic, Markhor, and TechJuice. Later there’ll be a section called “Startup Life,” but the idea for that is not yet fully formed.

A report by the World Bank, released a couple of months back, said that due to “heightened social media usage and increased access to technology, Pakistanis are more connected to global entrepreneurial and technology trends” than ever before, which is boosting a small and growing web/tech industry.
